Description

Expendables and small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) are playing an increasing role in both commercial and military operations, due in large part to their unique capabilities, as well as their (often) low development and deployment costs. Aided by an increasingly expanding COTS electronics market, it is estimated that upwards of 100 billion dollars will flow into the economy in support of expendables/sUAS over the next five years, driving improvements in such diverse areas as ISR, radio-relay, search and rescue (SAR), border patrol, law enforcement, precision agriculture, meteorology, construction, and of course, EW. This course provides attendees with a strong foundation in expendables/sUAS, from basic airframe classes and capabilities, to EW potential, to the current FAA airframe and pilot certification/flight approval process. Whether new to the world of expendables/sUAS, an EW payload engineer working in the field, or a project/program manager or sponsor wanting a broader understanding of this expanding aerospace arena, this course is the right course for you.

Course Delivery

There is a downloadable course syllabus provided for each session. It contains copies of all visual aids and problem worksheets for that session. It will be available for download in the meeting room.

Each session was presented LIVE by an actively engaged instructor. The virtual classroom allowed learners to “raise a hand,” ask questions audibly or type them in the chat, and the instructor responded in real-time. It’s just like sitting in the classroom.

  • This course will cover swarm Technologies, Capabilities and Potential, Sense and Avoid (SAA) Technologies, & Systems Engineering Constraints.

  • This course session will cover Survey of Expendables/sUAS Manufacturers and Products, FAA UAS Airframe, Pilot Certification and Flight Approval, & Public Awareness/Privacy Issues.

Dr. Patrick Ford, Advisory Board, Corvus Consulting has spent the past four decades in support of EW, including systems engineering, research, development, ground/in-flight testing, and extensive tactical experience supporting surface, subsurface, and airborne platforms. He has presented EW and UAS training around the globe, including professional seminars for both Erevno Aerospace and Corvus Consulting, as well as graduate courses for a leading aerospace university. He is currently an EW science advisor for the U.S. Navy, as well as a commercial UAS pilot, the latter including chief test pilot/test director for a new series of high speed/high altitude jet powered UAS. He also serves as the volunteer UAS Operations Advisor for Washington State’s Center of Excellence for Unmanned Systems. Pat received his Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences from Walden University, with a Specialization in Naval Warfare Operations Analysis, where his research focused on the first ever use of a commercial off-the-shelf radar on a Group 3 or smaller UAS. He received his Master of Science degree in Space Studies from the University of North Dakota. A retired U.S. Naval Reserve cryptologic officer, he is one of the few individuals to graduate from both the National Intelligence University Post Graduate Intelligence Program and the Middle Enlisted Cryptologic Career Advancement Program.
