Call for Volunteers

Volunteer at the 55th Annual AOC International Symposium & Convention

The AOC is seeking qualified volunteers to assist with the successful execution of the Annual Symposium and Convention.

All volunteers must possess quality customer service skills, be friendly and interactive, be well-spoken and professional, and possess basic knowledge and understanding of the AOC organization and convention. Candidates must be team players, possess positive attitudes, be self-motivated, enthusiastic and customer friendly. Individuals should wear comfortable walking shoes and business attire.

Volunteers who work a minimum of 10 hours or more over the course of the event are provided a full complimentary registration to the symposium and convention (does not include professional development courses or the annual banquet).

The complimentary registration is based on the honor system; if you sign up to volunteer, we are relying on you to show up at your allotted time and to complete the minimum of 10 hours that you signed up for.

AOC makes every effort to accommodate volunteers by assigning tasks and time preferences according to volunteer requests. Below are the duties of the various positions available.

AOC will not reimburse for travel expenses to include food and beverage or hotel rooms.

Volunteer Opportunities

Writers for the Show Daily

For 2018, we are soliciting volunteer writers that would be willing to deliver a session summary within a few hours of attending a session. This summary could even possibly be cobbled together during the session on a mobile device and then emailed off at the end of the session. The AOC staff will edit the summary for grammar, punctuation, and content to ensure quality before sending it out to the general public.

Individuals who are well suited to working registration are needed daily. Requirements include being computer savvy as badges will be printed on demand, in addition to greeting the attendee, checking the proper ID, give name badge and conference bag.

Symposium Door Monitors

Only certain badge types are permitted access to the Symposium session. Volunteers are needed to check name badges at the doors to the session rooms. If attendees are already in the room when you arrive at your shift, walk through the room and look for any non-allowable badges and ask them to leave. Certain circumstances will allow an aid without proper badge credentials to assist his/her boss during their brief only. You may sit inside the session room to listen to the briefs as long as you are stationed at a door and monitoring badges.

Innovation Stage

Two volunteers are needed daily to scan badges at the Innovation Stage on the show floor. Daily there will be multiple, fast-paced sessions – often times back-to-back – that volunteers will be required to ensure that each and every individual in attendance has been captured. Volunteers will also assist upon completion of the session, orderly return of headsets and tidying of the seating area.

Annual AOC Banquet Ticket Taker

The Annual banquet is a separate ticketed event held on Wednesday evening. Volunteers will be stationed outside the doors to ensure that attendees are not admitted into the ballroom until they are given the green light from AOC staff. Once you’re given the green light, volunteers will collect banquet tickets and assist with identifying vacant seating. Non-ticket holders will form a “wait-list” line and as all ticket holders are seated, if any empty seats are available, non-ticket holders will be permitted to purchase a ticket onsite. Four volunteers are needed for a one-hour shift.

Bag Stuffing and Set Up

On Monday before the Symposium, volunteers are needed to stuff the registration bags and prepare the registration materials. Upon completion of bags being fully collated, volunteers and staff will transition space to a staff office. This volunteer effort is in conjunction with AOC staff.

Information and Directional Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to welcome attendees arriving via Metro on Tuesday and Wednesday. Volunteers will provide information as needed and direct attendees to registration on the Hall A Concourse.

AOC Central Pack-up Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist AOC staff with packing and labeling AOC Central materials and inventory on Thursday afternoon. Volunteers will need to be able to lift boxes and work on feet for several hours.

STEM Program Group Leaders

The 4th Annual STEM Program will provide a venue to introduce high school and undergraduate students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields as they relate to Radio Frequency Spectrum, Electronic Warfare and Cyber Space. Volunteers are needed to lead the interactive presentations and static displays that will inform students on technologies, equipment and platforms utilized today and planned for the future. We have the capacity to support 300 students a day with this interactive introduction into the world of EW, Cyber, and Spectrum Operations.

Volunteers needed to welcome each group and introduce them to the STEM Program. They would give them instructions on how the program works and guide them to the first station where the booth volunteers will take over.

STEM Program Station Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to man one of 10 interactive educational station.  The volunteer will be given a script with what to say to the students about the station, however it is preferred that volunteers for the stations be knowledgeable about the topics. Stations consist of:

  • Spectrum
  • Communications
  • EW
  • Cyber
  • IED
  • CREW
  • Robots
  • UAS
  • M&S and Mission Planning
