The evening was filled with music, fun, a delicious buffet with hors d’oeuvres, entrees, and desserts. After dinner, the attendees enjoyed a Yankee Swap. The gifts were so liked that not much swapping went on! Gifts ranged from wine, gift certificates, books, games and chocolates! Then the centerpieces made by a member were given away. The chapter is already in process of planning events for 2019. The GSR maintains a strong commitment to advancing knowledge for Electronic Warfare and Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations by inspiring local industry to contribute their skills and products to serve the EW Community. The Granite State Roost continues to provide opportunities for interaction among its membership by holding social events throughout the year. Ice time was provided by the Nashua Country Club in Nashua, New Hampshire. Beginners' instruction and seasoned advice was eagerly given by members of the Merrimack Valley Curling Club. Forming two competing teams, everyone had the opportunity to throw and sweep. The cheering section had a great view from the warm lounge, and a good time was had by all. A tasty lunch buffet was served afterwards in the country club, with prime seating next to the flames of the fireplace. wrote on the Chapters: Granite State Chapter wall: On 4 October 2018, the Granite State Roost held a technical discussion and tour of the EW components manufacturing facilities at Mercury Systems in Hudson, NH. The event was co-hosted with the local IEEE-Microwave Theory and Techniques Society / Antennas and Propagation Society (MTT-S /AP-S). Col (ret) Earl “Skip” Stolz, VP of the Granite State Roost, presented an overview of the South China Sea and Mario LaMarche, Product Marketing Manager at Mercury Systems, presented application of GaN technology in active microwave components. Col (ret) Stolz discussed China’s background, resources, defense strategy, and perspective and then discussed the UN Convention on Law of the Sea, highlighting the implications to the United States. His conclusion focused on possible options for US policy, objectives and defense strategy. Mr. LaMarche presented the fundamentals of GaN technology, comparing its performance to GaAs technology, and highlighted GaN’s application to active components in EW systems. The evening concluded with a tour of the manufacturing capabilities at Mercury Systems’ Hudson, NH facility, which included a walk through a clean room. In an interesting intersection of the two evening’s talks, China’s rising manufacturing costs for electronic components is enabling increased investment in US manufacturing capabilities.
