RWR Emitter Identification

A Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) consists of an RF emitter, RF sensors, Pulse Train Formatter (PTF), Emitter Detector System (EDS), and Alarm System. The PTF transmits discrete data, such as signal polarization, and range data, such as RF frequency, to the EDS. The EDS uses this data to determine the emitter. The real-time bandwidth for detection constrains the total system performance and minimizing this bandwidth can be critical to the detection of threats. Implementations of the EDS have difficulty in treating ranged data and implementation can often degrade into linear searches of the entire emitter database. A method is proposed to to convert ranged data to discrete data. Using discrete data for PTF supplied pulse trains allows for binary searches of the emitter database instead of linear searches. In a 4096 emitter database this reduces the search from and average of 2048 probes for conditional checks of ranged data to 13 probes plus a constant overhead. The time savings allow an increased throughput of emitters to the Alarm System.
Arthur Schwarz graduated with a BS in physics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MS in Computer Science from Cal State University, Fullerton. His career includes work in Aeronautics, Aerospace, and Automotive software applications for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, Hughes Aircraft, General Dynamics, Raytheon, and Boeing. He has done systems engineering for early graphics systems and a ground station for telephony satellites and software architectures for messaging systems, database systems, FAA ground stations, automotive systems and Army vehicles. His implementation experience is in all these areas plus Army tanks and vehicle emulation in the digital battlefield, Navy Drones and RWR systems.
