Course Description

Space is an Electronic Warfare domain, just like land, sea and air.  We significantly dependent on satellite assets and those assets are vulnerable to enemy kinetic or electronic attack.   

In ground, sea and air based EW, the closer we get to targets, the better we can intercept or jam them.  Satellite borne systems are by their nature far away—creating challenges that require careful consideration.  Satellites do not go where we want them to go in the short term; they go where they want to go.   However, we can predict where they will be at any given time using tools taught in this course.

This is a two day course.  On the first day, we will cover spherical trigonometry, orbit mechanics  and radio propagation (on the Earth and in space).  These subjects will be handled gently, without any mind numbing math – just enough to support the second day’s material.  On the second day, we will apply these disciplines to practical space EW problems dealing with intercept and jamming of hostile radar and communication systems.  

The questions answered by this course include:

  • What is the relationship between the height of a satellite and the time it takes to revisit a target?
  •  How long can a satellite in a specific orbit see a target on the Earth’s surface?
  • What is the Doppler shift in a satellite to Earth link?
  • What are the elements of a satellite to earth link margin?
  • How well can an intercept receiver on a low Earth or synchronous satellite intercept communication and radar signals from Earth surface targets?
  • What J/S can a satellite borne jammer achieve against Earth surface communications and radars?

Handout material for this course will include a syllabus with all of the slides presented and a 25 page booklet with reprints of the recent JED EW 101 columns on Space EW.  Attendees will also receive an EW pocket guide, and an Antenna and propagation Slide rule.


Course Information

This course is held in conjunction with the 55th Annual AOC International Symposium & Convention, held November 27-29, 2018 in Washington D.C. Registration for that event does not constitute registration for this course, nor are there any connected costs or discounts.

This course will be held on-site for two days following this year's symposium and convention. Beverages will be provided to attendees, but meals are your own responsibility.  

Instructor: Dave Adamy

Dave Adamy has spent decades as a systems engineer and technical manager in the EW field, and several years as technical manager of programs to develop payloads for low earth and synchronous orbit satellites. He has published over 250 technical articles related to EW, including the popular EW101 column in the Journal of Electronic Defense, and has 16 books in print.  He has a master’s degree in electronic engineering (communication theory, with three graduate courses in orbit mechanics).  He teaches EW related courses for Military, Government and Industry organizations in the US and in allied countries.
