Delivering Innovative technology in support of EW, Spectrum, and Cyber Operations
The inaugural 2018 EMSO Challenge is a unique two-day event that will include hands on, team-based EMSO Decathlon challenge events in the morning followed by afternoon technical briefing sessions that will be Unclassified. The conference will focus on emerging concepts, innovative technologies, and unique approaches to current challenges that exist within contested and congested electromagnetic spectrum operations.
The EMSO Decathlon is a STEM-focused hands on competition consisting of 10 team-based technical challenges that include principles of Electronic Warfare, Information Operations, and Cyber Warfare. The challenges require basic knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with an aim to maximize the learning experience, promote intellectual development of EW/Cyber/Spectrum skill-sets, and recognize superior “EMSO Decathletes.” Decathlon participants will engage in basic exercises in spectrum, radio frequency propagation, frequency allocation, polarization, direction finding and geolocation, repeater placement, satellite communications, waveforms, jamming principles, cyber vulnerability concepts, EMS trivia challenge and more, progressing through a series of interactive lanes featuring technologies, equipment and platforms utilized today and planned for the future.
Attending the 2018 EMSO Challenge is highly encouraged to allow for the exchange of ideas and information, and to provide a venue to address new and emerging concepts as well as discuss ongoing and future research and development to set the conditions for innovation and success. The EMSO Decathlon is open to everyone who has an interest or actual experience in Electronic Warfare/Information Operations/Spectrum and Cyber operations. Target audience includes High School/College, Military Units, Government, Industry, Young and Old Crows, and anyone interested in a potential STEM career.
CALL FOR TECHNICAL DEMONSTRATIONS
The afternoon portion of the Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (EMSO) Challenge will comprise technical demonstration sessions to educate conference attendees in EW trends. The EMSO committee is soliciting proposals from companies or individual subject matter experts that are interested in demonstrating or presenting a current or emerging capability in EW, IO, Cyber, or EMSO. The intent of these demos/presentations is to move away from the standard briefing with slides and offer a more interactive, hands-on, and focused learning forum. The goal is for all that attend to gain a better understanding with respect to current and future threats, emerging requirements, technological advances, and potential opportunities for collaboration through an experiential and captivating learning environment. Conference demonstration/presentations must be unclassified and under 30 minutes in length (including Q&A), and may take place in either conference rooms or outdoor space. Topics for demos/presentations include but are not limited to:
- Hands-on vendor demonstrations
- Hacking 101
- Graduate student research projects
- Guided instruction on new tools
- Science Fiction Projects (e.g., how to build a lightsaber)
- Relevant topics (e.g., how to secure a patent)
- Cheap and “In The Field” Development (e.g., built a training system from Raspberry Pis)
Deadline for Submission of Proposals: 9 July 2018
Selections made by: 27 July 2018
Criteria for Proposals: Proposals for demos/presentations should be in text format, but figures may be included it they aid in understanding. Please limit proposals to one page of text or 400 words. Please include the following in your proposal submission:
- Title of demo/presentation
- Name of presenter and organization represented
- Scope and goal of the demo/presentation
- Location and format requirements (e.g., conference room size or outdoor space needed)
- Max number of attendees/participants your demo/presentation will accommodate
- Equipment you will bring to facilitate demo/presentation
- Equipment you will need to be provided
Submission information: Please ensure your proposal file is labeled with your last name and short title, e.g., “Smith_Cyber Effects Cell.doc.” Please forward proposals to firstname.lastname@example.org by 9 July 2018. Presentation slides, if applicable, will be required in Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 or earlier format.
There are several ways for your company to get involved with this year’s EMSO Challenge & Conference:
Become an Official Sponsor: Partner with us as an official sponsor at the Title, Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze package level. Based on your level selection, sponsorship may include your logo on promotional materials, company displays, complimentary event registrations, and opening remarks.
Lead a Demo: The afternoon portion of the EMSO Challenge & Conference will feature several technical demonstration-sessions to educate attendees in the trends of Electronic Warfare.
The EMSO conference committee is soliciting proposals from both organizations and individual subject-matter-experts that would like to present and demonstrate on current or emerging capabilities within the EW, IO, Cyber-Ops, and EMSO crafts.
The desire for each guest’s demo or presentation is to move away from conventional briefs with slides. Feel free to be creative with interactive and hands-on demos/presentations. Our goal is to both inspire and enhance the young attendee’s learning experience.
Form a Team for the Decathlon Challenge: The morning portion of the EMSO Challenge will consist of 10 team-based technical challenges that include principles of EW, IO, and Cyber.
The challenges require basic knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with an aim to maximize the learning experience, promote intellectual development of EW/Cyber/Spectrum skill-sets, and recognize superior “EMSO Decathletes”.
The Challenge event is ideal for the especially-junior professional.
Volunteer for a Challenge Lane: Lend equipment or provide volunteers to run a pre-designated Challenge Lane or run a Challenge Lane that you’ve helped to develop.
Ideas include basic exercises in spectrum, radio frequency propagation, frequency allocation, polarization, direction finding and geolocation, repeater placement, satellite communications, waveforms, jamming principles, cyber vulnerability concepts, EMS trivia challenge and more.
