 Learn about Radio Waves and How they Work!

Radio waves have the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. Here is the common classification of the electromagnetic spectrum going from large wavelengths to small: 

  • Radio
  • Microwaves
  • Infrared
  • Visible light
  • Ultraviolet
  • X-rays (but they are waves)
  • Gamma rays

All of these are electromagnetic waves and they all travel at the same speed (the speed of light). However, they have different interactions with matter.

 

Radar & Doppler Effect
The Doppler Effect detects frequency shifts - Lower frequency means the target is moving away. Higher frequency means the target is moving towards. The amount of frequency shift indicates target speed.

Wireless - How Does it Work?
Wireless networks operate using radio frequency (RF) technology, a frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum associated with radio wave propagation. When an RF current is supplied to an antenna, an electromagnetic field is created that then is able to propagate through space.

The X-47B is an experimental unmanned combat aerial vehicle - that's what the X stands for - and is designed to demonstrate new technology, such as automated takeoffs, landings and refueling. 

 

Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD) is a flexible and modular system that has the potential to keep aviators and aircraft out of harm’s way. MALD is an expendable air-launched programmable craft that accurately duplicates a U.S. or allied aircraft to enemy integrated air defense systems (IADS).

Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) a family of air-to-ground weapons that employ an integrated GPS-inertial navigation system and thermal imaging infrared seeker.

High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) is a supersonic air-to-surface tactical missile designed to seek and destroy enemy radar-equipped air defense systems.
